Hessle Draw At Leeds

2 Points Chucked Away

BRAMLEY PHOENIX 17, HESSLE 17

Hessle drew 17-17 at Bramley Phoenix in Yorkshire Division Four, which
on reflection was a fair result although Hessle could have won had
they taken their chances. The hosts made a blistering start with two
tries in the first ten minutes following some scintillating back play
and it looked as though it was going to be a long afternoon for
Hessle, but they fought back well and were on top for most of the
second-half.

The first touchdown came from a sweeping move from left to right which
ended with Ben Maddison scoring and then full-back Tom Scorgie
scorched through after some brilliant handling had created the gap and
left-winger Stewart Stevenson raced over for a try converted by
Maddison.

Hessle hit back when Rob Kitching and Danny Smith combined in a move
on the right which took play into the home '22'. From this position
Aaron Stone sold an outrageous dummy and handed on to Kitching, who
burst through for a try under the posts which he also converted.

Play fluctuated from end to end at a frantic pace, with Stuart Crooks,
Mike Ayers and Joe Donkin leading the way with some powerful
ball-carrying to gain valuable ground. Kitching was short with a
long-range penalty attempt and Lee Rollinson brought off a try-saving
tackle on Josh Woodhead. Bramley scored their third try on thirty-five
minutes when a kick ahead was hacked on by Stevenson and Scorgie
followed up to touch down to make it 17-7.

Stone regathered his own kick ahead and passed to Smith, who otherwise
was outstanding, but the full-back knocked on with the line at his
mercy. Ten minutes into the second-half Kitching stormed through and
from the second-phase Rollinson's cut-out pass sent left-winger Josh
Floyd over for a try on his debut. Hessle continued to hold the aces
and in the 61st minute Smith burst through, dummied and cleverly
delayed his pass to Floyd who stormed over for a well-worked try.
Kitching's goal attempt was narrowly wide and the score remained at
17-17.

Bramley had two opportunites to regain the lead and possibly win the
game, but good fortune was on Hessle's side and two penalty goal
attempts from distance both struck the post and rebounded into play.
