Hessle RUFC - a brief history

1886 The exact year of the formation of Hessle unknown, but by this year they had become an established and successful side led by Len Harrison of Hull. Indeed, when they lost to Hull Kingston Rovers in the Hull Times (Newspaper) Cup in the February it was regarded in local circles as a totally unexpected defeat.

1921 The club played in irregular black and white hooped jerseys and when they amalgamated with Hessle St.Johns, who played in green and white, the club colours became green, black and white. The distinctive club jersey has remained unchanged to this day. The club captain was A.B.Hill, and the President was Lt.Col. F.B. Moss-Blundell, C.M.O. D.S.O.

1926 Hessle played their home games at Northfield, with games being against such clubs as Driffield, Brunswick Avenue Old Boys, Old Grammarians (later to become Hullensians), Ionians, Grimsby and Hornsea.

1936 A new ground was set up at Park Avenue, but the headquarters were based at the Marquis of Granby public house in the centre of the town.

1938 Hessle reach the final of the Yorkshire Challenge Shield, losing 11-6 to Goole Old Boys at Selby.

1939 Ernie Chappell is appointed club captain for the eighth successive season.

1946 Fixtures are resumed after the war, withS.Edwards as captain and the first game being against Hull and East Riding 'A'.

1959 Headquarters move to the Darleys Hotel on Boothferry Road, and the club begins to field three teams.

1960 Jack Stothard becomes the first player from the club to be selected for the Yorkshire County XV.

1965 Hessle win the Yorkshire Shield for the first time, beating Sheffield University 6-0 in the final at Selby.

1973 The club begins to field five teams on a regular basis, with pitches being used on the foreshore grounds.

1975 The Yorkshire Shield is won for the second time, with a 13-7 victory in the final against Cleckheaton. Graham Jeffery scores 372 points for the first XV over the season,including 21 drop-goals.

1978 In December the new clubhouse on Livingstone Road is used for the first time, with the Stags and the fourth team being in action against Old Hymerians.

1989 Hessle, under the captaincy of Colin Spicer, are the Champions of Yorkshire League Division Four and Yorkshire Silver Trophy winners after beating West Leeds in the final..

1993 Hessle, under the captaincy of Paul Hutchinson, are the Champions of Yorkshire League Division Three.

1999 In the final of the Yorkshire Shield,Hessle lose 22-8 against Castleford at Brantingham Park.

2001 On April 14th, Hessle achieve their highest-ever score in League matches with a 91-0 win over Mosborough at Livingstone Road.

2007 Hessle reach the final of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy for the second time, but lose 22-14 against Old Otliensians.

2008 Under the captaincy of Dave Leeman, Hessle are Champions of Yorkshire Division Four.

2012 After climbing through the leagues culminating in a season in Yorkshire 2, Hessle find themselves at the bottom of Yorkshire 3 but in the semi final of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy.
